Our History
Mountain Credit Union has a rich history of serving the people of Western North Carolina. Established in 1963, our mission has always been to provide financial services to our members with dedication and integrity.
We were originally formed on April 5, 1963, to serve federal employees in the region. At that time, Arcade Credit Union was the only credit union available, but it was limited to federal employees working in the Federal Building in Asheville. Recognizing a gap, Fran Miller, along with six others, took the initiative to charter AFE Federal Credit Union (Asheville Federal Employees).
In 1983, AFE FCU began diversifying its membership by including Select Employee Groups (SEGs) from various industries in Western North Carolina. This move paved the way for the credit union's growth and led to a name change to Mountain Federal Credit Union to reflect its broader membership base. By the mid-1980s, several large industrial groups and local employee groups had joined MFCU, prompting the opening of new branches in Fletcher and Franklin, NC.
Throughout the 1980s and beyond, MFCU continued to expand through mergers with other credit unions, including Haywood County Employees Credit Union, Macon Citizens Credit Union, and Cherokee Federal Credit Union. These mergers not only increased our membership but also expanded our reach across Western North Carolina.
In 2004, Mountain Credit Union was granted a Community Charter, allowing us to serve anyone living, working, worshipping, or attending school in six counties. This charter was expanded in 2010 and 2022 to include a total of twelve counties: Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Swain, and Transylvania.
Today, we operate a network of branches strategically located to serve our members better. With branches in Waynesville, Fletcher, Franklin, Cherokee, Sylva, Candler, and Murphy, we ensure that our members have convenient access to our services.
Join us and experience the difference of a community-focused financial institution. With a strong history and a commitment to your financial well-being, we are here to serve you!
